Introducing Captain Suzy Acevedo: ASA Instructor

We are proud to announce that Captain Suzy will be offering women-only and Spanish-speaking ASA courses at Waypoints Annapolis Summer 2021!

Captain Suzy attended the University of Puerto Rico on a full scholarship to compete in track and field. There, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and has been teaching watersports since 1981. Suzy is a sailing instructor (ASA), as well as a scuba diving instructor N.A.U.I., a lifeguard, an aqua-aerobics and swimming instructor, and a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master Captain.

“I have been sailing internationally for over 35 years,” Suzy said. “My mission is to promote safety on the sea and to inspire other women to get involved in water sports.”

Suzy has 39 years of broad teaching experience covering all ages – from toddlers to adults. She is also an accomplished Spanish teacher with more than 25 years of full-time instruction experience in Maryland. She has decades of experience coaching sports including sailing, swimming, track and field, soccer, and other water sports.

Captain Suzy has management, marketing, and curriculum development experience. She founded and owns Capitana SOS, LLC – a maritime talent company that matches captains and crew with the roles in the charter industry in the Caribbean and U.S. Suzy’s proudest accomplishment was leading a rescue flotilla of boats to pick-up 30 stranded U.S. citizens who were marooned in the BVI by Hurricane Irma. She was humbled to command 5 additional flotillas as large as 29 vessels to assist in the Caribbean recovery effort following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

As an Instructor, Suzy teaches by the following principle: “I always consider my pupils’ strengths to help me bring out the best in each of my students and athletes.”

Captain Suzy is excited to work at Waypoints Annapolis during Summer 2021 where she will be close to her sons, Miguel and Marcos.

Suzy particularly enjoys working with couples teaching ASA and boat maneuvering, and developing water communication skills. Suzy is also a respected volunteer USCG Auxiliary Instructor who works with the Navigation License Courses.
